About Pregnancy Podiatry
Pregnancy can put a huge additional strain on your feet. In addition to the extra weight and hormonal changes, during the latter stages of pregnancy many women find that they can’t reach their feet at all. Some of the problems include:
- Swollen feet and ankles caused by poor blood circulation as a result of pressure on veins in the pelvis. The veins leak liquid into the tissues causing swelling and pain. The result is you need a larger shoe size.
- Heel and arch pain due to the changing shape of your feet. Your extra weight increases the pressure on your arch, tending to flatten it.
- Varicose veins due to a reduction in blood flow is a common problem which is further exacerbated by the hormonal changes you are experiencing.
- Increased likelihood of ligament strain occurs because the hormone relaxin that softens the pelvic ligaments in preparation for childbirth is non-specific; it softens the rest of your ligaments too, making them far more susceptible to damage.
If there are times in your life when you most need care from a podiatrist, then pregnancy will certainly be one of them. Our podiatrist will be able to examine your feet and treat immediate problems. We will evaluate problems with your gait and posture and provide you with orthotics as necessary to provide support.
We will also advise you on the best ways to take care of your feet, ankles and legs to minimise any current discomfort and to avoid ongoing problems after you have given birth.Contact Us
