About Pregnancy Pilates

Pilates is an excellent way to exercise in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. If you are worried about exercising when you are pregnant these classes are specifically designed for you. Not only does it maintain your fitness and strength, it also helps strengthen the pelvic floor which helps you during the prenatal phase and helps prepare your body for the birth. After your baby has been born, post-natal Pilates is an excellent way to get back in shape and get your body back.

4 Key points about our pregnancy pilates classes

  1. If you are still in your first trimester, your priority is to rest as much as you are able. All the changes that are going on in your body are likely to make you feel fatigued, especially if you are keeping up a busy lifestyle. Gentle exercise is fine but this is the time your body is adjusting to the changes going on inside.
  2. If you have not done exercise before you can begin Pilates classes during your second trimester. If you are familiar to exercise there is no harm in starting pregnancy pilates classes or 121 pregnancy pilates classes in your first trimester so long as you are not too tired. By the second trimester you are likely to have lots of energy, so make the most of it by practicing Pilates to lay down the foundations for the months ahead. In your third trimester you will be feeling progressively heavy and you are almost certainly coping with various aches and pains, but it is now that you should be able to really appreciate the benefits of pregnancy Pilates classes. They will help you with your posture, prepare you for the birth, and enhance your postnatal recovery.
  4. You can usually resume Pilates classes after around 6 weeks following a natural birth, though check with your doctor first. Our specialist midwife osteopath Sara Randall can always give you advice on this should you need this.
