Babies and the postnatal period

So whether it’s advice on positional talipes, reflux, colic, sleep issues, neck rotations or breastfeeding – there is always an answer. Babies often develop body patterns in uterus that sometimes need gentle treatment to resolve. It’s a bit like a habit – for example, crossing your legs all the time is a habit that the body remembers and becomes a body pattern. Well it can happen to babies as well if they are snug and tight in the uterus and the pattern remains post-delivery. For example, does your baby look more to one side than the other? Not all these patterns are a problem though. We are happy to provide health checks to all babies and we follow a philosophy of find the problem, fix the problem and then leave the baby alone! It may be that your baby just needs to have a few sessions of baby massage.

Mums and the postnatal period

Mums can also have similar patterns; a common example is a twisted pelvis, or pelvic torsion. Basically this means that there is a small amount of asymmetry or mis-alignment somewhere in the pelvic joints that may have occurred from trauma (car accident is an example), falling on the bottom, carrying a toddler or child on one side, so that certain muscles are overworking. Pregnancy and giving birth also change the pelvis due to hormonal changes and a change in posture. There are many reasons why this happens and these can be assessed at our clinic. Sometimes it’s just a case of prescribing some exercises and other times more assistance may be required. Ultimately, the goal is to make your body function the best it can without pain, and minimise future problems.
